Installing and setting up Monowall server

In this blog I will deescribe how to set up and install monowall router. First start by downloading Live CD from here. After you have the CD and computer that can run Monowall (64MB RAM 486CPU 2xNIC) put cd in the drive.

Run the atacontrol list. Look for:

ATA channel 0:
Master: ad0 <WDC WD200EB-75CSF0/04.01B04> ATA/ATAPI revision 5
Slave: ad1 <WDC WD800AB-22CBA0/03.06A03> ATA/ATAPI revision 5
ATA channel 1:
Master: acd0 <_NEC CD-RW NR-7800A/10DA> ATA/ATAPI revision 0
Slave: no device present

Devices with names starting with ad are hard drives.

For the example, we will use ad0, and the standard PC image.

Use the following command to install monowall software to the CD:

gzcat /usr/m0n0wall/generic-pc-1.11.img | dd of=/dev/ad0 bs=16k

Restart computer.

When computer restarts you camn go to BIOS and disable all not needed devices intgrated inot motherboard, make sure you set motherboard to automatically restart on power loss and enable fast boot.

WHen monowall loads you will see short menu - next step is to assign right ip adresses to your network cards and identify which one is WAN and which one is LAN.
